The
Center for the Study of Sexualities at National Central University in
Taiwan is a research- and information-based collective focusing on the
theme of sexuality in its relation to gender and other social
differences such as class, race, age, able body, etc. I guess that does
not include animals. The travesty is that any government, be it in
Taiwan or the United States, feels it has the right to interfere in our
freedom to obtain knowledge. Bestiality is a sexual act, why should that
not be included in a curriculum at a center that informs and studies
human sexuality. I am appalled that Professor Josephine Ho is being
punished for educating her students. 台灣中央大學的性／別研究室是個資料收集與學術研究的集結，專門研究性與性別及社會差異（例如階級、種族、世代、身體狀況等等）之間的關連。我猜其中並不包含動物研究，但是不論台灣或是美國，要是政府認為自己有權干預人民獲取知識的自由，那就是嚴重的侵權行為。戀獸癖是一種性行為，以性為學術主題的研究中心為何不能研究它？我覺得何教授因為教育工作而被處罰是不可思議的。 2003/07/09(Wed)

catholic church conspicuously failed to speak out against the murder of
gay men, gypsies, jews and by their silence are implicated in the guilt
of the fascist forces that perpetrated these crimes against humanity. do
not for one moment believe that by keeping silent these forces will not
one day knock on your door and seek to lock you away in a dark place
forever. struggle for this freedom and tear down the walls that keep
still lonely and silent places where breeds that vile and contemptuous
idea that love (and yes that might mean things you do not like) can in

Ho's work is internationally known as highly reputable research that has
pioneered enlightened and unprejudiced thinking and academic work not
only in Taiwan but on a global scale. Her work has helped to make
Taiwan's reputation as a beacon of democracy and progress in Asia and
internationally. It would be most regrettable if these achievements both
for Professor Ho and for Taiwan were stained by spurious attacks of this
nature. 何教授的學術成就不但國際有目共睹，公認她的學術研究與思想具有啟發性以及客觀性，在台灣與全球都佔有領先地位。她的成就幫助台灣在國際間維持民主進步的聲望，要是何教授的成就持續被這種荒謬的攻擊抹黑，那真是非常令人遺憾。 2003/07/11(Fri)

Ho's contribution to scholarly studies on gender, sexuality, and
cultural diversity cannot be underestimated. She is both a highly
esteemed researcher in international academic circles and a tireless and
extremely effective advocate for social justice in the local context of
Taiwan. To censor and stifle professor Ho's critical voice at this point
in the painstaking construction of a truly representative and inclusive
public sphere in Taiwan would, simply, be disastrous. It would not only
represent an irreparable loss for Taiwanese academia, but would also
constitute a lamentable impoverishment of international scholarship in
gender, sexuality, and social justice studies. 何教授在性別和文化多元上的學術成就不容低估。她不但是國際學界高度推崇的研究者，也是台灣社會非常有力地推動社會正義的運動者。禁止並噤聲何教授的社會批判言論將會嚴重打擊台灣努力建造的多元發言公共空間，不只台灣的學術界蒙受不可彌補的損失，也會是國際性別和社會正義研究圈令人惋惜的損失。 2003/07/12(Sat)

The
heart of democracy is freedom; the first and most important freedom is
freedom of thought and speech. Punishing a scholar for scholarly
activity is not merely tyrannical and foolish, but has a chilling effect
on all thinkers. Taiwan's economy is founded not on the natural
resources of the island, but the natural ability of its inhabitants. The
step from scholarship to entrepreneurship is tiny. Historically, those
countries that restrict thought and speech find their economies and
material wealth similarly restricted. I hope Taiwan can avoid the path
of impoverished thought which will be inevitably be followed by the path
of impoverishment. 民主的核心就是自由：第一個而且最重要的自由就是思想及言論的自由。懲罰一個學者的學術活動不只是殘暴專橫和愚蠢，也對所有的思想家造成寒蟬效應。台灣的經濟成就並不來自這個島嶼的天然資源，而是來自於人民的活力。學術與企業成其實關係密切︰在歷史上，缺乏思想及言論自由的國家在經濟及物資上也會貧乏。我希望台灣能夠避免思想貧瘠所造成的經濟貧瘠。 2003/07/13(Sun)
