Here is how the story goes.
Once upon a time, John, a seven-year-old boy, was playing mirthfully with a hunchbacked child. Their cheerful laughter dispelled the unfamiliarity and defensiveness that usually existed between two strangers. Children tend to express their feelings in the most direct way, but strangely, naïve John showed no reaction to his new friend』s physical deformities.
When they got tired, they sat down to rest. Gazing into each other』s eyes for a while, all of a sudden, John seemed to have figured out something. He stood up firmly, walked to the other child』s side, and said in a tone of pride, 「I know why your back is crooked.」 Sensing that he was about to be hurt by this new found friend, the child took the safest position of self-defense by remaining silent. At this moment, he was too nervous to speak anyway.
John pressed on in the same direct way, 「I know what is inside your back. Do you?」
「No,」 the child replied weakly.
Unable to hold back his overwhelming joy, John, with a dazzling smile, said to the child: 「The crooked back is a bamboo basket with a pair of angel wings inside, waiting to be unfolded by God.」
At times, we hope that we, like the child, could be accepted and understood; we hope that even our deformities could be appreciated by others in a positive way. Still more often, we hope that we could bring others courage, comfort, and support as John did.
All of us are walking on the path of self-fulfillment. While achieving our own goals, we hope that we can help others accomplish something too.
