Life on a Bus

Despite having a driver』s license, I do not possess any means of transportation. So, for years I have been a bus passenger. Thanks to this experience, I have observed every type of passenger on the bus. Some were well-suited, others tended to be tackily-dressed. Nevertheless, through these passengers of all ilks, I truly believe I have discovered the real diversity of life. The most impressive and unforgettable experience took place on one Mother』s Day evening. I was going to get off at the last stop before the bus terminal. Before the bus arrived at my destination, I noticed there were only four passengers left on the bus. One of them was a little boy who took the seat right behind the bus driver. The little boy aroused my curiosity and I cannot help wondering who his parents might be. As the bus passed McDonald』s, to our astonishment, the driver made a stop and apologized to us, saying that he had an errand to run. Turning around, he continually said to the little boy, 「Daddy is going to buy something. Stay on the bus, ok?」 So the little boy turned out to be the bus driver』s child. According to my observation, the boy was thin, short, and very obedient; he sat quietly on the seat, looking outside the bus window and patiently waiting for his father. At this time, another question came into my mind. 「Where is the boy』s mother? On this Mother』s day, why has the industrious father brought his own child to work, driving under the dark sky of Taipei city?」 There was a stylishly-dressed lady on the bus; she decided to walk since it would only take two minutes to reach her destination. So she deposited some coins into the cash box and got off the bus. Another middle-aged woman asked the little boy in a voice of displeasure, 「Young kid, where on earth is your father going? How long will he be gone? Exactly how long is he going to be?」 Being scared, the boy timidly shook his head. I was completely dismayed by the woman』s behavior, criticizing the bus driver in the face of his son? Under the dim light on the bus, I saw a frightened child shaking his little head helplessly. Before long, the bus driver returned with a bag of McDonald』s food. He quickly took his seat and kept apologizing to us. The boy』s face broke into a smile of relief. That scene was very touching: within ten short minutes, I had seen a kind father, a gentle child, and an unsympathetic woman.
Why can』t the woman understand the difficulties of a single father trying to play the mother』s role? Shouldn』t we be considerate and always give someone a hand in our life? Even though the father lacks higher education and high social status, and is stuck with a menial job, his love toward his child is not lessened, and neither is my deep respect for him. As I was getting off the bus, I said to the driver from the bottom of my heart: 「You are really a hard worker!」 My unexpected act took him by surprise. He paused for a moment and then recollected himself and said bashfully: 「I should. It』s my duty. Thank you.」 Whenever I recall this story, I am always filled with overwhelmingly touching feelings. I now believe more than ever than people should not be cold toward one another; instead, we should open our hearts to appreciate every touching event in life. After all, that is the truest face of life!
