Dear Sir:

Taiwan Review is an international English monthly established in 1951 and published by the Government Information Office, Republic of China (Taiwan). Its readership spans America and Canada as well as Taiwan. Articles in Taiwan Review are often further translated into French, Spanish, German and Russian and published in GIO』s other monthly and bi-monthly publications.

Taiwan Review is now in the process of planning a special report on the topic of 「Resident Writers in Taiwan.」 Although the program is on temporary halt for the moment at National Central University, we have learned that your distinguished department was the pioneer in the conception of this kind of program. We would really appreciate it if you would grant us a telephone interview of at most 15 minutes.

Following are the two areas we are interested in inquiring about:

1. The reasons why you introduced the resident-writer program.

2. What are the difficulties in the continued existence of the resident-writer program in Taiwan?

If you feel there are other aspects that we should look into in our report, please feel free to tell us. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Ellen Chang

Dear Professor X,

Thank you for sparing some time in reading this letter.

This is John Wu, the editor of Cite Business Weekly Publication. In December, we are going to publish a new volume for our Classical Literature Series, namely, 「Decameron」 by Boccacio, the father of short fiction. As your expertise and research in this area are widely-known and well-respected, we sincerely hope you would consent to writing a preface for this book to promote the passion for reading among our adult readers.

The goal of this series is not only to re-awaken the interest in classical literature among our adult readers but also to cultivate new readers who had never paid attention to classical literature. We truly believe that if you are willing to write the preface, it will certainly inspire both kinds of readers. We are hoping that the word count for the preface would range from 1500 to 3000 words, and the proposed deadline is now set on November 21st, Monday. For your effort, the writer』s fee will be two NT dollars for each word.

We sincerely hope that you will consent to making a contribution to this worthwhile endeavor. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to call at xxxxxxxx.

Sincerely yours
John Wu
Editor

Dear Sir:

This is Gia Lee, reporter of the arts and literature section of NCCU (National Chun Chi University) campus newspaper. It has been announced that the Fifth Annual Gender and Medical Science Workshop will be held this coming weekend. As both an expert on gender issues and a college professor, you will be more than qualified to comment on the significance of this occasion. Following are three questions that may interest our readers and I sincerely hope you could spare some time to illuminate us.

Q. 1: The themes of the workshop deal with historical developments in relation to the female body and health-related issues. As these do not seem to be topics that appeal to today』s university students, what can we do to arouse their interest in learning more about these issues without putting the discussion into an overtly academic tone?

Q. 2: In your experience teaching in a university, what is the most/least successful part in Taiwan』s gender education?

Q. 3: Many university women who are interested in attracting the attention of men through taking care in choosing their outfits (including mini skirts and high heels) encounter difficulties in body movement. Girls in junior high who suffer form menstrual discomfort and are forced to ask for sick leave will also be unduely interrogated by their teachers who demand proof of evidence. Do you think these phenomena are caused by an unconscious gender inequality/gender power?

These are my questions, thank you very much for your time and help.

Dear Workshop Students,

Our workshop is just around the corner. It is a great honor to have you in this gathering and we hope that after all the hustle and bustle at the end of a busy semester, you would find at our workshop some relaxation, some new stimulation, and some new friends who are coming from all over the world. For your convenience in making arrangements for your itinerary, we』d like to offer you the following information concerning the workshop:

The workshop will be held in Chung Li from Jan. 12th to 16th, 2006. Our activities in the first two days will be at the International Conference Hall in the Liberal Arts building in NCU, and the rest of the program will be held at Cuva Chateau Hotel where you will also find your accommodation. The workshop will end with a dinner banquet on the 16th.

The opening ceremony is on Thursday Jan. 12th at 2 p.m., and the conference will start at 2:30 p.m. (For more detailed information on the program, please check the schedule enclosed.) Lunch will be provided. Please bring your luggage with you to the registration desk in the Conference Hall and we will check into the hotel together at the end of the day. (For more information on transportation, please check our web-site. Cab fare from Chung Li train station to the campus should be between 150~200 NT. The drivers usually do not go by the meter, so make sure you negotiate the price before getting into the taxi.)

The Hotel provides excellent facilities that will meet all your needs. Each room, equipped with Internet access and excellent amenities, is to be shared by 2 members who can enjoy the rich breakfast buffet provided by the Hotel each morning. There is a big park right across from the Hotel; you can do your morning exercises and evening strolls there. Within a 5 minute walk, there is a famous night market which we recommend that you visit at your leisure; and within a 20 minute walk, there is Sogo Department Store, a movie theater, and a shopping area nearby for your recreation. Please feel free to plan for your evening activities. As for the meals, we will have lunchboxes on the 12th to 13th and buffet for dinner. For the other days, light lunches and buffet dinners will be prepared by the Hotel. On the last day, we will have a traditional Chinese banquet. Rest assured that we will do our best to make it an enjoyable journey.

Handbooks (which will include personal teaching materials provided by members), stationary items, proceedings and certificates for completion of the workshop are now being prepared. Attendees from overseas are also on their way and we look forward to your arrival as well. We hope to bring you an enriching and memorable workshop. Thank you.
