Race\uff0c\u4ed6\u662f\u96ea\u68a8\u5927\u5b78\u6027\u5225\u8207\u6587\u5316\u7814\u7a76\u7cfb\u7684\u7cfb\u4e3b\u4efb\uff0c\u4e3b\u8981\u7814\u7a76\u7684\u984c\u76ee\u662f\u300c\u5065\u5eb7\uff0e\u6027\u5225\uff0e\u6587\u5316\u300d\uff0c\u4ed6\u7684\u535a\u58eb\u8ad6\u6587\u984c\u76ee\u5f88\u6709\u610f\u601d\uff1a<em>Pleasure Consuming Medicine<\/em>\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u8aaa\uff0c\u7576\u4ee3\u5c0d\u65bc\u6d88\u8cbb\u8005\u548c\u516c\u6c11\u9019\u5169\u500b\u8eab\u5206\u7684\u60f3\u50cf\u5f80\u5f80\u9810\u8a2d\u4e86\u597d\u7684\u6d88\u8cbb\u8005\u624d\u80fd\u505a\u597d\u7684\u516c\u6c11\uff0cKane\u5247\u5f9e\u9019\u500b\u8108\u7d61\u88e1\u4f86\u6aa2\u8996\u4eba\u5011\u4f7f\u7528\u5a1b\u6a02\u85e5\u54c1\u7684\u7fd2\u6163\uff0c\u4ed6\u60f3\u8981\u5efa\u69cb\u4e00\u500b\u6bd4\u8f03\u53e6\u985e\u7684\u3001\u53cd\u6b63\u5178\u7684\u516c\u885b\u601d\u8003\uff0c\u4ee5\u56de\u61c9HIV\u548c<em>AIDS<\/em><em>\uff0c\u4e5f\u5c31\u662f\u5728\u4e00\u500b\u5f88\u6b63\u5178\u7684\u601d\u8003\u88e1\u5c0b\u627e\u4e00\u500b\u53e6\u985e\u7684\u770b\u6cd5\u3002\u9019\u500b\u984c\u76ee\u5f88\u722d\u8b70\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u7576\u5e74\u9084\u662f\u5f97\u5230\u6700\u4f73\u535a\u58eb\u8ad6\u6587\u734e\uff0c\u5f8c\u4f86\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u90fd\u548c\u91ab\u5b78\u3001\u79d1\u6280\u3001\u6027\u6709\u95dc\u3002\u73fe\u5728\u4ed6\u5728\u7814\u7a76\u65b0\u5a92\u9ad4\u5982\u4f55\u8b93\u540c\u6027\u6200\u4e92\u76f8\u8a8d\u8b58\u4ea4\u5f80\uff0c\u601d\u8003\u65b0\u5a92\u9ad4\u6709\u4ec0\u9ebc\u65b0\u7684\u53ef\u80fd\u6027\uff1b\u53e6\u5916\uff0c\u4ed6\u4e5f\u7814\u7a76\u74f6\u88dd\u6c34\uff0c\u7814\u7a76\u5b83\u662f\u600e\u9ebc\u8b8a\u6210\u4e00\u500b\u53ef\u4ee5\u8cb7\u8ce3\u7684\u6771\u897f\uff0c\u6709\u4ec0\u9ebc\u793e\u6703\u610f\u7fa9\uff0c\u975e\u5e38\u6709\u8da3\u3002\u4eca\u5929\u6211\u5011\u6709\u4e00\u500b\u82f1\u4e2d\u3001\u4e2d\u82f1\u7684\u7ffb\u8b6f\u968a\uff0c\u4e01\u4e43\u975e\u548c\u5f35\u53cb\u9756\u6703\u63d0\u4f9b\u670d\u52d9\u3002\u73fe\u5728\u8acb<\/em><em>Kane Race<\/em><em>\u958b\u59cb<\/em><em>\u3002<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kane Race: \u00a0Hello, everyone, great to see you all here. \u00a0Thank you very much for coming. \u00a0I\u2019d really like to thank my hosts from the Center for the Study of Sexualities at NCU. \u00a0It\u2019s really a great honor to be invited to be here and a wonderful opportunity to get to know the work of the members of the Center, whose works actually I\u2019ve admired from afar for several years now, ever since I first came across them at the Sexuality conference in Bangkok in 2005. \u00a0So thank you very much for the invitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u4e01\u4e43\u975e\uff08\u7ffb\u8b6f\uff09\uff1a\u5927\u5bb6\u597d\uff0c\u5f88\u9ad8\u8208\u898b\u5230\u5404\u4f4d\uff0c\u4e5f\u8b1d\u8b1d\u4f60\u5011\u4f86\u3002\u6211\u8981\u611f\u8b1d\u4e2d\u592e\u5927\u5b78\u6027\uff0f\u5225\u7814\u7a76\u5ba4\u9080\u8acb\u6211\u4f86\u53f0\u7063\uff0c\u975e\u5e38\u9ad8\u8208\u6709\u6a5f\u6703\u548c\u6027\uff0f\u5225\u7814\u7a76\u5ba4\u6210\u54e1\u9762\u5c0d\u9762\u4ea4\u6d41\u3002\u6211\u57282005\u5e74\u6cf0\u570b\u8209\u884c\u7684\u300c\u7b2c\u4e00\u5c46\u4e9e\u6d32\u9177\u5152\u7814\u7a76\u570b\u969b\u6703\u8b70\u300d\u4e0a\u5c31\u77e5\u9053\u4e86\u4e2d\u592e\u5927\u5b78\u6027\uff0f\u5225\u7814\u7a76\u5ba4\u7684\u5404\u9805\u5de5\u4f5c\uff0c\u6211\u975e\u5e38\u4ef0\u6155\uff0c\u4e5f\u611f\u8b1d\u4f60\u5011\u7684\u9080\u8acb\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Kane Race: It\u2019s particularly exciting and interesting for me to be talking a little bit about my book <em>Pleasure Consuming Medicine<\/em> here in Taipei. \u00a0When I began work on this project, which was back in 2000, actually my family was living in Bangkok at the time. \u00a0I was observing the mechanism of toxins, programs on social moral order, where there were a number of raids of gay saunas, and I was following the news at the time. \u00a0It struck me as a very particular use of drug testing technologies in order to perform a sort of symbolic operation for the state. \u00a0I began to do a little bit of research and I saw that similar events were happening in Taiwan in Taipei at the time, where there were raids of gay sex parties and HIV testing and drug testing following the raids. \u00a0It seemed to me that this was sort of a broader pattern or broader technology of government that required analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u5f35\u6c38\u9756\uff08\u7ffb\u8b6f\uff09\uff1a\u5f88\u9ad8\u8208\u53ef\u4ee5\u548c\u5927\u5bb6\u5206\u4eab\u6211\u7684\u5c08\u66f8<em>Pleasure Consuming Medicine<\/em>\uff0c\u9019\u672c\u66f8\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u5de5\u4f5c\u662f2000\u5e74\u958b\u59cb\u7684\uff0c\u90a3\u6642\u5019\u6211\u548c\u5bb6\u4eba\u4f4f\u5728\u6cf0\u570b\u66fc\u8c37\uff0c\u7576\u5730\u5a92\u9ad4\u5831\u5c0e\u4e00\u9023\u4e32\u5c0d\u540c\u5fd7\u4e09\u6eab\u6696\u7684\u7a81\u8972\u81e8\u6aa2\uff0c\u6211\u56e0\u6b64\u958b\u59cb\u89c0\u5bdf\u9019\u7a2e\u7dad\u8b77\u793e\u6703\u9053\u5fb7\u79e9\u5e8f\u7684\u884c\u52d5\u3002\u6211\u611f\u89ba\u9019\u4e9b\u73fe\u8c61\u5176\u5be6\u662f\u4ee5\u4e00\u7a2e\u7279\u6b8a\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u4f86\u5229\u7528\u85e5\u7269\u7be9\u6aa2\u6280\u8853\u66ff\u570b\u5bb6\u57f7\u884c\u4e00\u7a2e\u8c61\u5fb5\u6027\u7684\u884c\u52d5\u3002\u6211\u5728\u641c\u5c0b\u76f8\u95dc\u8cc7\u8a0a\u6642\u767c\u73fe\uff0c\u7576\u6642\u53f0\u5317\u4e5f\u6709\u985e\u4f3c\u7684\u5c0d\u540c\u5fd7\u8f5f\u8db4\u9032\u884c\u81e8\u6aa2\u7684\u884c\u52d5\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u4f34\u96a8\u8457\u5f37\u5236\u7684\u9a57\u8840\u3001\u9a57\u85e5\u3002\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u9019\u4e9b\u73fe\u8c61\u986f\u7136\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u5bec\u5ee3\u800c\u64f4\u5927\u4e2d\u7684\u6cbb\u7406\u6280\u8853\uff0c\u9700\u8981\u6211\u5011\u8a73\u52a0\u5206\u6790\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Kane Race: So while I am really not confident to talk about politics in East Asia or South-East Asia, and the book maybe talks about developments in Australia, I would say that some of the key concepts in the book have been very much informed by my impressions of what has been happening in East Asia and South-East Asia. \u00a0So I am very looking forward to learning more about this.<\/p>\n<p>\u4e01\u4e43\u975e\uff08\u7ffb\u8b6f\uff09\uff1a\u96d6\u7136\u6211\u5c0d\u8a0e\u8ad6\u6771\u4e9e\u6216\u6771\u5357\u4e9e\u9019\u65b9\u9762\u7684\u653f\u6cbb\u6c92\u6709\u5341\u8db3\u7684\u4fe1\u5fc3\uff0c\u800c\u6211\u7684\u66f8\u4e3b\u8981\u662f\u95dc\u65bc\u6fb3\u6d32\u5728\u9019\u500b\u8b70\u984c\u4e0a\u7684\u767c\u5c55\uff0c\u53ef\u662f\u5728\u64b0\u5beb\u7684\u904e\u7a0b\u88e1\uff0c\u6211\u4e5f\u53d7\u5230\u4e86\u6771\u4e9e\u548c\u6771\u5357\u4e9e\u6b63\u5728\u767c\u751f\u7684\u8a31\u591a\u73fe\u8c61\u7684\u555f\u767c\uff0c\u6211\u975e\u5e38\u5e0c\u671b\u80fd\u5920\u9032\u4e00\u6b65\u77ad\u89e3\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Kane Race: People ask me why I wrote <em>Pleasure Consuming Medicine<\/em> as I began my PHD project. \u00a0I guess my first response to that is that growing up as a gay man in Sidney in the 1990s, invariably, in much of one\u2019s social world, or important aspects of one\u2019s social world, drugs were part of that. \u00a0If one didn\u2019t take them oneself, that was certainly part of the most important scenes of gay socializations, bars, dance parties, and so on. \u00a0And it seemed to me that there was a degree of everyday experience and expertise and, you know, proficiency in how to use drugs. (\u773e\u4eba\u7b11) \u00a0That was just really part of people\u2019s everyday experience. \u00a0But the disconnect between this practical experience of people on the ground and the official discourse was so glaring, you know, such a big gap between them that it seemed to me, you know, absolutely absurd.\u00a0 Something needed to be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u5f35\u6c38\u9756\uff08\u7ffb\u8b6f\uff09\uff1a\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u554f\u6211\u70ba\u4ec0\u9ebc\u535a\u58eb\u8ad6\u6587\u8981\u5beb\u9019\u500b\u984c\u76ee\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u76f4\u89ba\u56de\u61c9\u5c31\u662f\uff0c\u4f5c\u70ba1990\u5e74\u4ee3\u5728\u96ea\u68a8\u6210\u9577\u7684\u7537\u540c\u6027\u6200\uff0c\u85e5\u7269\u7d55\u5c0d\u662f\u540c\u6027\u6200\u793e\u6703\u751f\u6d3b\u5f88\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u4e00\u9762\uff0c\u5c31\u7b97\u4f60\u81ea\u5df1\u4e0d\u7528\uff0c\u5b83\u4e5f\u662f\u540c\u6027\u6200\u793e\u6703\u5316\u5834\u57df\u88e1\uff08\u4f8b\u5982\u9152\u5427\u3001\u8dd1\u8db4\u3001\u7b49\u7b49\uff09\u5f88\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u5143\u7d20\u3002\u5728\u65e5\u5e38\u751f\u6d3b\u88e1\uff0c\u5927\u5bb6\u5c0d\u65bc\u5982\u4f55\u4f7f\u7528\u85e5\u7269\u90fd\u6709\u5f88\u719f\u7df4\u7684\u77e5\u8b58\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u85e5\u7269\u5c31\u662f\u5927\u5bb6\u65e5\u5e38\u7d93\u9a57\u7684\u4e00\u90e8\u4efd\u3002\u7136\u800c\u5728\u5b98\u65b9\u8ad6\u8ff0\u548c\u500b\u4eba\u5be6\u969b\u751f\u6d3b\u7d93\u9a57\u4e4b\u9593\u537b\u6709\u8457\u5de8\u5927\u7684\u843d\u5dee\uff0c\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u975e\u5e38\u8352\u8b2c\uff0c\u61c9\u8a72\u4f86\u505a\u9ede\u4e8b\u60c5\u6539\u8b8a\u5b83\u3002<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Race: \u5728\u6211\u5011\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u7576\u4ee3\u4e16\u754c\u88e1\uff0c\u5404\u570b\u7684\u88fd\u85e5\u5de5\u696d\u5927\u91cf\u751f\u7522\u4e26\u92b7\u552e\u5404\u7a2e\u85e5\u7269\uff0c\u4e0d\u50c5\u70ba\u4e86\u6cbb\u7642\u75be\u75c5\u3001\u6062\u5fa9\u5065\u5eb7\uff0c\u4e5f\u8d8a\u4f86\u8d8a\u70ba\u4e86\u6539\u5584\u751f\u6d3b\uff0c\u4e5f\u5c31\u662f\u8b93\u751f\u6d3b\u597d\u904e\u4e9b\uff0c\u4f60\u53ea\u8981\u53bb\u770b\u770b\u76ee\u524d\u6709\u591a\u5c11\u6027\u85e5\u7269\u548c\u60c5\u7dd2\u63d0\u5347\u85e5\u7269\u548c\u5b83\u5011\u6240\u5f62\u6210\u7684\u66b4\u5229\u5e02\u5834\u5c31\u77e5\u9053\u4e86\u3002\u4e0d\u904e\uff0c\u9019\u500b\u8da8\u52e2\u7576\u7136\u4e5f\u6162\u6162\u6a21\u7cca\u4e86\u91ab\u7642\u548c\u5a1b\u6a02\u4e4b\u9593\u7684\u5206\u91ce\u3002\u6709\u8da3\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u76ee\u524d\u5728\u821e\u6703\u548c\u591c\u5e97\u88e1\u6700\u53d7\u6b61\u8fce\u7684\u85e5\u7269\uff0c\u5e7e\u4e4e\u90fd\u662f\u5728\u91ab\u7642\u4e0a\u666e\u904d\u4f7f\u7528\u6216\u6b63\u5728\u5be6\u9a57\u4e2d\u7684\u85e5\u7269\uff0c\u5305\u62ec\u6cbb\u7642\u6182\u9b31\u75c7\u7684K\u4ed6\u547d\uff0c\u6cbb\u7642\u731d\u7761\u75c7\uff08\u65e5\u9593\u55dc\u7761\uff09\u7684\u6db2\u614b\u5feb\u6a02\u4e38\uff08GHB\uff0csodium thing to respond to because the family is reified and romanticized certainly, and globally, these days, as a sort of ideal haven, and the cure to social problems. \u00a0I guess I would add to that by saying, yes, it\u2019s important to educate parents around different ways of responding to their children\u2019s practices. \u00a0But I think probably a more urgent task for queer activists is to envisage and elaborate forms of community cares, collective care that don\u2019t always come in the family Race: I think that\u2019s a very good question: why is it so difficult to acknowledge the pleasure that people take in drug use. \u00a0I think part of the answer is because we have something like a sort of artificial set of distinctions between illicit drugs and licit drugs. \u00a0You mentioned that everybody, presumably, actually not everybody, but you know, taking pleasure in sex is sort of accepted as normative thing. \u00a0I mean I guess you can say the same about intoxication. We like a glass of wine or a glass of beer at dinner. That\u2019s a drug. It\u2019s a drug! That experience is that it gives us momentary suspension of subjectivity, which allows us to engage in various forms of attentiveness or inattentiveness. \u00a0It allows us to forget the day; it allows us to do things we otherwise might not do. \u00a0So intoxication is universal drug history, and universal culture. \u00a0But, it\u2019s not so hard to understand. \u00a0I think the way that drug use, illicit drug use, is minoritized made it seem like sort of, you know, a special group over here. \u00a0It is something that needs to be actively challenged because in fact intoxication is much wider form of human Race: One other thing I would like to add to that is this sort of categorization of different forms of intoxication: alcohol is okay; other drugs are not okay. \u00a0There\u2019s obviously a gendered politics for this as well. \u00a0So if you think about the development of the dance culture, I am not sure if it\u2019s the same here, but in many Western contexts, dance culture, initially, the culture that developed around ecstasy, very much saw itself as sort of alternative to the hetero-masculine beer drinking culture in Australia. \u00a0So the attempts to say this is the way people should be intoxicated.\u00a0 Every practice of intoxication has a set of affective, gendered, structures of feelings. \u00a0So what we are engaging in here is that forms of gender politics and cultural politics as well a lot of the often, families can\u2019t bear all the pressures that are put on to them. \u00a0So this sort of investment in the family by the state is doubly objectionable, because its frames the family of all this pressures that the family is being called upon to manage that makes mothers feel bad, makes fathers feel bad. \u00a0And often the problems have much more complex political economic social cultural peculiar to Australia; it is very much true of neo-liberal governments in many other in which there seem to be some links between experimentation and drugs.\u00a0 \u00a0So the users are innovators in a very interesting way. \u00a0There\u2019s a process by which there is a sanctioning only sorts of experimentation and innovation within institution framework with all the, you know pharmacy or scientific fields that are institutionalized.\u00a0 And so what is happening is an interesting taking away from people the ability to innovate at this level that has implication for a general theory of knowledge. And it is really striking to me that if this were to take place in the community setting, it would be processed as misuse of abuse, and therefore illicit. \u00a0So I think that is a very interesting and important sort of frame to set this in. \u00a0Also you were mentioning about appropriation is absolute how oppose the equation it seems to me that the penalty to define certain uses of drugs as abuse, as misuse, is very much deemed to the medical monopoly to what drugs should be used for; and that is of course commercial monopoly. Come on! This is actually quite an ordinary pleasure.\u201d \u00a0I don\u2019t mean a normal pleasure, I mean an ordinary pleasure. \u00a0So in some ways, if anything, it\u2019s a de-dramatizing argument, rather than trying to be subversive. \u00a0In fact, what I was trying to do in the book is to say this isn\u2019t that way out there. \u00a0So that\u2019s one thing I would say in response. \u00a0The second thing is: how do you mobilize communities that are more explicitly built around pleasure? \u00a0I actually think they are doing a really good job at mobilizing themselves. \u00a0They are having a whole bunch of very important social effects as we speak. \u00a0If I think about how, for example, the history of Mardi Gras, which is a great big party, has affected the culture in Sidney, I think the effects are undeniable, that it created a friendly, more vibrant dynamic, more exciting sort of atmosphere that has led to better sorts of capacities to engage with difference. \u00a0And to me that\u2019s very important social change. \u00a0So I guess I am trying to resist the idea that there\u2019s this inherent separation between pleasure and politics. \u00a0Actually we have a politics that\u2019s imminent in our pleasure Race: I guess I will start by saying that it will be a mistake to hear my argument as non-controversial in the Australian context. \u00a0In other words, this is a controversial argument in Australia. \u00a0The history of Mardi Gras that I outlined, took place in the 1980s, when we had a much more progressive labor government in Australia. \u00a0That was a period where there were a lot of progressive social reforms. \u00a0That all stopped in 1996 and in some ways, I think, more recent political developments in Australia have produced a incredibly socially conservative culture. \u00a0But because we have these historical precedents, I guess that provides one of the condition of possibility for making these arguments, because we have a successful record in HIV\/AIDS, which is internationally recognized, it makes it possible for arguments that evidence themselves in relation to that history to have some sort of purchase. \u00a0Even though, there is a lot of amnesia now around that history as well. \u00a0I am also glad that you raised this question of the work ethic because that\u2019s something I was very interested in in my book. \u00a0One of the chapters talks about this scene from \u201cSouth Park,\u201d where this whole episode about this guy who comes back from one of the characters, Stan\u2019s past; he comes as Stan\u2019s future self and he\u2019s been on drugs. \u00a0It turns out the parents have employed an actor to comment, to enter Stan\u2019s life to play Stan\u2019s future self precisely in order to conjure up this sort of inappropriate work ethic in Stan. \u00a0So this is something you can see replicated in a lot of anti-drug discourse, where it seems like sort of spectacle about this horrible, disappointing future is used to in order to, you know, promote this sort of enterprising work ethic sort of self. \u00a0When people describe a sort of life on drugs as in terms of waste, what they are talking about is the dangers of not adhering to the work ethic. \u00a0So it\u2019s a central theme and topic within an anti-drug setting. \u00a0I am sure there are different sorts of ways that play out here which I can\u2019t really comment on. \u00a0But certainly the Australian version of work ethic is part of what people are getting anxious about when they are about will say in recent campaigns for example of binge drinking, which is an allowed form of drug abuse, but it is still being pathologized and problematized. \u00a0The main discourse that comes up in public health campaigns is that we have campaigns like \u201cWhat are you doing to yourself? \u201d where the image is of a women that has got herself into some sort of sexual danger through drinking too much. \u00a0That is the overriding narrative; it\u2019s an interesting responsiblization of female subjects or sexual assault. \u00a0Because if they drink, they have no one else to blame. \u00a0So that\u2019s one of the ways in which the discourse of sexual danger seems to be entering into the way an intoxication problem is being constructed. \u00a0In relation to the discourse on illicit drugs, certainly in some of the anti-drug campaigns you will see images of prostitution as one of the potential bad outcomes of getting hooked. \u00a0So the discourses are definitely there. \u00a0You know, features as part of this anti-drug discourses. Race: \u00a0Thanks for your question. \u00a0Just in terms of methodology, I didn\u2019t directly do an empirical research on this but I drew on a lot of already conducted empirical research that explore people\u2019s experience of drug use, and particularly looking at papers on drug practices. \u00a0I don\u2019t think that empirical research is necessarily about the neoliberal subject, and basically whether a model of pleasure and drug use that could be made to fit with sort of idealized conceptions of neoliberal subject. \u00a0I think, it is a very interesting sort of question for a couple of reasons, one is, in consumer society, the idea you can engage in a sort of a \u201ccontrolled<strong> de-control<\/strong>\u201d of the emotions, that\u2019s a term from the sociologist, Cas Wouters, is absolutely one of the subjective positions that we are all expected to inhabit. \u00a0There can be times where we relax. \u00a0There can be times where we tune out. \u00a0So in some senses that sort of subject position that consumer society might be considered lend itself toward. \u00a0But there is also, what you are saying is interesting for another reason, within the harm reduction literature, the way that people are often countered this sort of demonizing discourse of drugs is by saying \u201c Oh, no\u2026drug user is a completely in control rational subject. \u00a0They know what they are doing\u2026 they are making choices about their behavior, et cetera et cetera et cetera\u2026.\u201d \u00a0I think that sort of counter argument has an element of truth to it; often drug users are more in control than anti-drug discourse might have you believe. \u00a0But to me it just repeats the version of the neoliberal subject that\u2019s in control, sovereign, choice making, etc. \u00a0So in my more recent work, even toward the end of <em>Pleasure Consuming Medicine<\/em>, I sort of try to think about different ways of paying attention to what is going on for the subject, for whom intentionality is not overriding mode of operation. \u00a0I am interested in this sort of subtle shifts and modulations that take place when people engage in pleasure. \u00a0To me, paying attention to this is a way sort of displacing this presumption of a sovereign subject, who is always in control of their actions and intentions and so on, which seems to me is the subject neoliberal discourses
