總圖書館 Library

Ladies and gentlemen, as my classmate has already pointed out, the most important index of a university’s strength in research and scholarship is its library, and here we are, at the main library of National Central University. This library building itself has become a landmark of NCU; one can easily see this gigantic building when driving on the high way. Rumor has it that the authority was going to put a NCU self-titled neon sign at the very top of the library building in order to promote the publicity of this university.

The ideal location of a library would be the center of the university campus with easy access to other buildings. That was the decisive factor why the library in front of you is built where it is now. Under limited budget and space for construction, the library was built in a most economic and modest way, and the colour white is meant to give a clean-cut, freshly distinctive impression.

This library is well-known for its luminous lighting and interior design and has attracted visits by a good number of librarians from other academic libraries around Taiwan and mainland China. The most unique collections at this library center upon the field of Earth Sciences, as well as the study of a famous Ching Dynasty Chinese novel, "Dream of the red chamber"—which I am sure you have heard of. Apart from that, this library is one of the few university libraries that have a weird collection of local comic magazines so as to meet the needs of our community readers.

Of course, a library could only provide limited space as the collection expands. Though the architects had a vision to make this building stretch as high as eight floors so as to be used for many years to come; still, it's expected that this library is going to saturate in less than 10 years. As the library is already closely surrounded by many other significant buildings, such as the school of liberal arts, the school of earth sciences, and the administration building, further library development faces difficulties. However, the old library, which you have just visited, is about to serve as the reserve place once this main library is saturated.

Right now, the main library has been operating pretty well, except for the fact that readers oftentimes complain about the freezing air-conditioning and the mosquitoes in the basement. The library is now desperately in need of human resources, that is, librarians, to manage its growing collections. Currently, only 20 librarians are staffed to run this whole library. With such a limited number of staff, this library is already working at its optimum capacity to serve as the faculty and students of the University as well as the entire Tao-yuan area. We hope in the future more resources will be devoted to this very important branch of our university. Thank you.
