女十四舍 Girl's 14 Dorm

We are standing in front of the newest student dorm on campus, and it is an all-women dormitory. You probably realize by now that National Central University is known for its colleges of Engineering and sciences, but it also means the majority of its students would be male. As the student population grows and more and more women entered the university, the shortage of housing facilities for women became all the more clear. After quite a long period of struggle and a few unfortunate incidents involving girls who live off campus, the university authorities finally decided to build this dorm for women. It has 12 stories, hundreds housing women students, both graduate and undergraduate. To improve the quality of dorm life, each room has its own bath and a veranda that looks out upon a spectacular view of the campus as well as the city. To enrich the student’s daily life, the building also has its own gymnasium, a study center, and a laundry center, and a community room with a TV set for the students’ recreational hours—although the television set sometimes doesn’t work properly. To add to the convenience of students, a cafeteria, a barber’s shop, a comic rental place, a bakery, and even a convenience store are located in the basement.

Across from the women’s dorm is the university hostel, where visitors could stay for a fee. This hostel is renovated from one of the older dorm buildings, and the interior looks very much like any hostel, with individual baths, refrigerators, and TV sets in each room. I believe the renovation was done for publicity purposes, as the university hopes to make itself more palatable for visiting professors, parents, and scholars. It will also help solving the problem of accommodation with the increasing number of conferences held on campus.
