百花川荷花池 Hundred-Flower Stream & Water Lilies Pond

* Hundred-Flower Stream (百花川)

Ladies and Gentleman, we have now reached one of the best-known scenic sports on campus. This little conduit in front of you has a very literary and romantic name, “Hundred-flower stream.” The name itself brings forth a picture of thousands of colorful flower petals falling from the trees that line this stream to dance on its water. This name, I guess, is the work of some imaginative student of the past. In reality, the hundred-flower stream is an irrigation line, an affluent of Shinmen Reservoir. It provides sufficient water supply for farmlands down stream just as the River Nile did for Egypt. During spring, the planting season, the amount of waterflow in this stream reaches its highest point, bringing life to the fields surrounding our campus.

The sad things is, as the university campus is carved out of farmlands, it is also surrounded by all the small-to-medium size factories that dot the farmlands. As a result, the water quality of hundred-flower stream has been variously polluted by the waste water from these industrial plants. Though university officials try torestore its beauty by protesting against water pollution, it has not really improved much. Nowadays, for most students in NCU, the beauty of the hundred-flower stream has declined—it’s no longer a “stream,” but a smelly gutter for its disgusting smell of chemical and pigs’ feces. So nowadays when students walk by it, instead of hanging around there or extolling its beauty, they cover their noses with their hands and flee as soon as they can, like terrified birds.

* Water Lilies Pond (荷花池)

Next we come to the water lilies pond. This is an artificial pond dug completely by human forces to add a different kind of landscape to our campus. The university then spent 20,000 NT dollars to plant water lilies to perfect its beauty. During wintertime, the water lilies pond is just like a lifeless water hole; people walk by without even giving it a glance. Yet, when summertime comes, the scenery of the water lilies pond blossoms into a wonderful sight of tranquility and beauty. Lotus flowers bloom wildly and recklessly, swinging back and forth in the summer breeze. The pond then becomes is a popular dating and recreational spot for NCU students, as well as other locals and visitors. Numerous wedding couples come to the water lilies pond to pose for their wedding photo shoots and several hot TV series have also been shot here. You will have to come back in the summer to enjoy the true beauty of the pond. In fact, this university may be famous for its college of Sciences and Engineering but it’s the beauty of the water lilies pond that gives the campus a touch that is truly out of the ordinary.
