大門口 Main Gate

Good afternoon! My Name is Charlie. Welcome to the main gate of National Central University. As you know, the main gate provides the first impression on the university, and as such, school authorities really gave the landscape design some serious thought. As the university values studies, the major landmarks at the front gate are designed to symbolize the most important tools that we use in Chinese calligraphy, the art of writing. The tall tower standing over here represents the Chinese Brush Pen; the oval shaped garden on the slope down from the gate is the ink well; and behind us, the Administration Building, with its little squares resembling blocks to be filled in with Chinese characters, represents the paper; and last but not the least, this bed of flowers is shaped like the ink stone that is rubbed against the inkwell to produce the ink that we write to write with.

Standing at this high ground, we have a perfect view of the skyline of Chungli City. The long straight road that connects the university to the main thoroughfare, is lined with silk-cotton trees (木棉樹), which will blossom into beautiful red clouds when the season comes and it has become one the most famous scenic spots for the city. To further add to its beauty, the city government decided to widen the road as well as put in pedestrian walks, cozy park benches, and towering street lights on both sides so that the boulevard will be like the Champs-Elysées in Paris. We are sure this renovation will add to the beauty and fame of the university.

National Central University has a very long history. It was originally called the SouthEast University back in 1927 in China. During the Chinese civil war, Chiang Kai-shek and his supporters and allies moved their government to Nan-gin (南京) and decided to start a university for the great number of teachers and students who are following them. They worked to get nine colleges and universities in 江蘇 province to consolidate into what was then called the National Central University. (The “central” in its name of course embodies the legitimacy of Chiang’s government.) After the Communist take-over of Mainland China, that university changed its name to Nan-gin University. In the meantime, National Central University was reborn here in Taiwan to continue the great heritage. The tower standing here was erected to commemorate the occasion and to serve as a constant reminder of its distant roots in Mainland China.

I might mention something else that many of us have felt strongly about. When authorities were looking for land for the relocation, the university president then thought that it would be best to locate the university on top of this little hill where we would be isolated from the hustle and bustle of the daily world so that students could concentrate on their studies without much distraction. Well, it kept the distraction away, but it also kept the inspiration away. In fact, we are so isolated from the city and community life that the university has to make special efforts to keep a vibrant life to nurture the students’ understanding of the society we live in. Fortunately, city buses and the internet are now helping our students remain in touch with the world. That probably explains why National Central is one of the top-notch universities in computer sciences. Well, we have a lot of grounds to cover still, so let’s move on to other interesting spots on the campus. Thank you.
