頭不見囉! Off with the Head!

One of the few ghost stories of NCU is that the statue of the late president Chiang Kai-shek would adjust his crossed legs and smile when people walk by it at night. But early March, a real terrifying ghost story began to circulate the campus of NCU.

The head of Chiang Kai-shek’s statue was found to have been chopped off over night, as if copper was as easy to saw as wood. Upon hearing the news, many students rushed to the scene to see this spectacle. They found the words “TFCF” spray-painted behind the statute. School officials had covered the un-headed statue with a large canvas at first notice but failed to contain the news. The shocking story spread on the bulletin board system, and because of the sprayed letters on the statue, there were rumors that said the execution was done by an underground organization named TFCF, "Taiwan Folk Culture Front”, a mysterious underground organization that focused on political issues. People even say the real name of TCFC is actually “Taiwan Fuck China Front.”

Because the statue was beheaded just after the 228 memorial day, rumors say that it was done as a revenge upon Chiang Kai-shek’s mass-slaughter of innocent people during his reign. TFCF made a declaration a week later, saying that they do not deny nor admit if the event was related to them. They proclaimed themselves as a large cross-cultural organization, and there is the possibility that the deed was done by one of their members. Even though they are against meaningless destructive actions and any forms of terrorist behavior that harms other people’s lives, they find it unnecessary to do further investigations because this event had not harmed anyone and no violence was concurred. Regarding Chiang Kai-shek, the groups openly opposes the statue of a dictator being rebuilt in a liberal school. They strongly suggest that the school keep the beheaded statue as a relic and call it as the 228 event monument. In their opinion, a monument of anti-tyranny can educate people about the truth of Taiwan’s history.

The headless statue has been removed and the marble platform now stands empty. If the school eventually decides to place a new statue there, there’s no doubt that a big wave would again rock the campus.
