中大湖 Chung-da Lake

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have now arrived at the most famous scenic spot of National Central University. Originally, this county in which we are located had a lot of irrigation ponds. As the university was being built, a number of smaller ponds were combined to make this lake, and since then it has played many different functions for the students and citizens in the neighboring area.

As you can see, this is really a beautiful place—the sun shines upon the emerald green trees and small turtles stretch themselves out on the bank for sun-bathing. With the lake as background, this location is a hot spot for wedding pictures. Recently, one TV series was also shot here. When the night comes, the atmosphere is totally different from the day—it becomes even more romantic, and many lovers choose the dark shades by the lake as their place of intimacy. This arch bridge carries a legend—if lovers walk across that bridge together, their hearts and souls will become one. The arbor which rises above the lake is also a great place for lovers, but you’d better come early or else you’ll have to line up for that romantic and private place.

The areas along the bank of the lake has been designated as the BBQ area. Whenever local residents and students hold recreational activities, they usually have a BBQ here. But that also creates a problem. This lake is filled with fishes; and if you have superfluous food, you can feed them here. However, as you can see, this original plan has been disabled by the trash problem. In the Christmas season, this place is decorated with numerous little lights bulbs. At night, the brilliant stars of the sky and the flashing light bulbs by the lake reflect upon one another and greatly increase the festivity of Christmas.

One thing I should mention in relation to the lake has to do with a not-so-honorable tradition among the student population of this university. Nobody knows who started it, but the unwritten rule says: if you are having your birthday soon, your friends have the right to throw you into the lake as part of the celebration! What’s more, after the “doomed” one is thrown in, the perpetrators will have to jump into the lake too. In other words, you can choose to be thrown in by others or jump in on your own. If you have spent any time in this lake, you would personally realize how abundant it is—there are cell phones, keys, all kinds of trashes, or even bicycles on the bottom. You just might get lucky and pick up some valuables while you are down there.
