As a fast growing city, Chungli has developed two main shopping districts. The older one spreads out from the train station where thousands of people pass through each day. Since most of the commuters are students from neighboring towns, the shops in the train station area tend to focus on consumer products and small appliances, such as cell phones, watches, or portable stereos. Then there are the name-brand clothing stores, optical stores, shoe stores, book stores, record stores, and sports goods stores (including world-wide brands such as Nike, New Balance, and Reebox). As different types of transportation converge in this area, there are also a lot of fast-food places such as Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza-Hut, and Napoli's Pizza), and recreational places such as karaokes or video arcades. Banks and public service buildings are also located in this area.
The other newer shopping district centers around two major department stores, Sogo and FarEastern. They carry everything from imported exotic foods to locally produced snacks, not to mention the newest fashions and home appliances. And to take advantage of the drawing power of the department stores, other clothing stores, shoe stores, theaters, pubs, also gather in the neighboring blocks, making this new business district all the more attractive and prosperous. The area around the Sogo department store is especially designed to give customers a feeling of middle-class taste, with broad public spaces, underground electrical systems, and romantic outdoor cafés. Recently a new movie complex opened right across the parking lot from Sogo's. It looks like a new urban center is already in place. Although this district is not easily accessible as it is located some distance from the nearest bus route, the Sogo department store now provides shuttle buses that run regularly between the store and the train station. Even if you are not going there to shop, you can still take advantage of the shuttle if you need to visit that area.
