荷花池 Lotus Fields in Guan-Yin

Tao-Yuan County is well-known for its agriculture, especially its rice. But in recent years, in order to upgrade the value of its economic crops, many farmers in this county have begun experimenting with other forms of agriculture. The most successful of them happens to be the Lotus Fields in Guan-Yin.

Guan-Yin is located in the suburbs of Jung-Li, and between May and September, many individual farms would join together and host a Lotus Festival in order to attract the tourists. During these months, the lotus flowers are at their peak. As you can see, the flowers are of a fairly impressive size. When you have a whole field of them, and as the wind blows through the swaying stems, they are indeed quite a sight! The flowers would open up wide in the early morning and gradually close up toward sundown. They are so beautiful that many tourists would buy lotus plants or seeds and try to reproduce the beautiful sight in their home.

The lotus is a highly useful plant. The cooks of local restaurants often take advantage of the whole plant—flower, seed, root and all—and create delicious dishes out of them. Sometimes, they would steam rice wrapped in lotus leaves to give it a special wonderful flavor. Some teahouses serve tea made from lotus flower petals. And some farms even provide lotus ice to cool off the tourists as they walk through the lotus fields in the sun.

As you stand in front of the lotus fields, you are not only enjoying the beautiful scenery, but also watching the economic future of Tao-Yuan county. So now let’s pitch in and help with the economy by having a nice dinner here.
