中壢夜市風光1 The Chung-Li Night Market 1

The night market is one of the specific cultural phenomena in Taiwan. Now we are taking you to one of the many night markets in Chung-Li.

The night market is a sort of every-day carnival that starts from six in the evening and runs through midnight. Various venders and stands offer a wide range of local foods, snacks, clothing, shoes, games, and folk customs. You may even find some copycat products of name brands. The biggest attraction, though, is the low prices there. It is the place where you could obtain maximum pleasure with minimum cost.

The merchandise in the night market reflects not only the most recent fashions of the Taiwanese younger generation, but also the ups and downs of Taiwan economy, for many of the stalls sell surplus or returned merchandise from struggling factories. By looking at the new arrivals at the night market, you get an idea of what lines of business have just gone under. Another interesting thing is that nowadays the stall-keepers are getting younger, and many of them are foreigners as well.

Auctions are another must-see in the Chung-Li night market. The vender brings in all kinds of merchandise, ranging from tiny Chinese teapots to huge Buddhist statues. To encourage the bidding, the owner would give out a small present in return every time you shout out a price. So, everyone’s happy and the bidding goes on.

The foods in the night market may not be as delicate as French cuisine, but it is a great chance for you to sample real Taiwanese taste. Plus, eating at the side of the road may be an unforgettable experience for you.

After you have filled your stomachs, you can rest your feet at on of the game booths and enjoy some folk games. Even if you’re not good at playing them, every participant still gets a gift from the booth owner. You might end up filling your backpack with lots of fun and generous presents—sometimes even a guinea pig from the pet lottery.

Most people may think that visitors like the night markets in Taiwan because of their operating hours. But, I’d rather think that it is because of the surprises and the friendliness that they find at the night market.
