石門水庫 Shi-men Reservoir

The biggest water conservation project in South-Eastern Asia happens to be located right here in Taoyuan County of Northern Taiwan. The water reservoir was built in 1964 above the Da-han River to serve its multifunction of water services, irrigation, power generation, and flood prevention. But for tourists as well as residents, Shi-Men Reservoir is best known for the many scenic spots surrounding it.

Foremost among them is the breath-taking view from the top of the reservoir. You can practically see for miles on a clear day. If you would like to take a closer look at the reservoir itself, there are boat services that can ferry visitors all around the reservoir. In order to assure an all-year-round display of beauty, officials have planted an assortment of flowers in the area. As the seasons change, the flowers also bloom accordingly. In spring time, the azalea, the peach trees, and the cherry trees blossom over the mountains and fields. In summer, the flourishing leaves prevent visitors from getting sun-burned. The maple leaves of fall are the most attractive, while the plum flowers decorate the lake in winter.

As recreation is the most important reason why people come to the reservoir, there are now two amusement parks to entertain the visitors. If camping and barbequing are what you like, there are special areas for those activities across the lake in A-Mu-Ping. But no trip to the Shi-Men reservoir is complete without a meal of local fresh fish. Local restaurants can turn one large-size fish into ten delicious dishes. In fact, the fish banquet is so popular that many visitors come to the Shi-Men reservoir just for a taste of it. All in all, the marvelous reservoir, the beautiful landscapes, and the delicious local fish attract many visitors every day.
