台灣人很保守嗎? Are Taiwanese Conservative?

Migo

You might think that Taiwanese are doomed to be conservative, considering the historical traditions of the Chinese culture that they have inherited. And we ARE still taught to be obedient to our parents at home and our teachers at school. Everywhere we go, whatever we do, there are rules to be followed. Age-old prejudices are never challenged.停 Yet in recent years, people are beginning to observe the signs of change, that there is a new generation that acts in sharp contrast with the past.

The most obvious difference停 is their liberal attitudes towards停 sex. In the past, sex was a taboo subject; it was even uncivil to talk about sex in public. Yet a street poll in 2000 asks—停"How soon would you want to have sex with a new boyfriend or girlfriend?—停and 57% of Taiwan respondents between the ages of 16 and 19 answered 停"within one month." This is a sign that sex issues have changed from "something you don't talk about, 停to something people talk about without restraint" 停and "something you can't do, 停to something people do without restraint"! The impact of the mass exposure to sex is now showing up in young people, making obsolete the Chinese cultural rule that decrees停 “people should not have sexual relations until after marriage.”

Sexuality of the young has changed radically among these new generations of Taiwanese. For them, 停conservativeness is no longer the golden rule. Instead, being themselves, pursuing what they want, is of highest value. So, are Taiwanese conservative? 停 Well, as far as sex is concerned, Taiwanese young people are certainly not conservative anymore.
