外在美的性別世界 Beauty is Only Skin Deep

Beauty is only skin-deep, or some people would say, "women" are only skin-deep.

Generally we believe that only women are involved with make-up, but walk into the Sogo Department Store during cosmetics sales, the make-up artists who touch your cheeks softly, whisper names of colors like magic spells, look into your eyes and say "your eyes are beautiful and dark blue mascara would bring out the mystery", are all MEN, especially French and Japanese good-looking guys. Should we say that men are now monopolizing women's paradise of skin-deep indulgence? Or should we explain it as women lacking career confidence?

A girl I know fell in love with cosmetics and claimed that she wanted to go to make-up classes. The only thing her father could say to this young ambitious woman was, "what you are gonna do in the future? A cosmetics sales person?" The father's worry may be misguided, but it is true that many more men are now in the same business.

Are we to view this as a female victory that men now prefer women's jobs and choose their careers accordingly? There are famous books written by men, which introduce tips of beauty treatment and women enjoy more and more services provided by male make-up artists. What we see here is that a field that used to belong to one sex is now gradually wiping off the boarder to welcome the opposite sex. At the same time we observe that more and more women are jumping up to the stage of fashion retailing. In this skin-deep world, men and women will be equal, and soon the men we know will start their interest in becoming skin-deep persons too.
