台灣的政治 Politics in Taiwan

The world knows Taiwan as an island that produces cheap daily goods as well as high-tech products. What it does not know so well is that Taiwan is also striving to be recognized as an autonomous state, despite constant pressure and threats from China. Recently, the Taiwanese government is making great efforts to change that.

First of all, the government now issues passports with the wording of "Taiwan" added unto that of "The Republic of China." This is a remarkable step as the name of the country now includes the key term "Taiwan." Although the government may not be able to completely remove the term "China" in the near future, it is conceivable that eventually "Taiwan" will replace "China" as the only recognizable term on the covers of Taiwanese passports.

The government’s strategy is echoed by masses of people too. Last Saturday, thousands of people took to the street in downtown Taipei, marching to advocate the use of "Taiwan" as the official name of the nation. They shouted slogans such as "We are Taiwanese" and "Our nation’s name is Taiwan." This alliance has been promoting the name change to help Taiwan assert its place in the international community.

What does the international community think of Taiwan’s status? The Japanese Lawmaker, during a seminar in Shanghai, suggested that China support Taiwan’s entry into the United Nations and he is opposed to the use of military force by China against Taiwan. Although the US government does not seem to be ready to take that step, the Taiwanese government is hoping that the US government will come to face the reality of Taiwan’s autonomy in the future.
