When I was about ten years old, as many girls, my parents bought me a
lot of dolls and I enjoyed playing them with my playmates. One day,
while I was playing with my best playmate, an older-than-me girl,
accidentally, I pulled the doll』s head off. I stood laughing at the
funny look the doll had, but my playmate got a terrible look on her face
and that stopped my laughter.
「What happened?」 I asked.
「You pulled its head off? You will be killed!」 she screamed.
「Crazy nonsense.」 I turned my head away.
「I mean it. I have heard something about this—once you damage the doll,
especially its head, the doll will revenge on you. It will kill you by
sucking your blood to dry. Midnight, this midnight will be your moment
of death.」 She said slowly.
「Liar!」 I shouted out.
「I AM NOT! One of my friends…」 she kept talking but I could no longer
hear what she told me. I looked at the doll』s head, its face seemed
changing—its sweet smile now had become a terrible nightmare. I threw
the doll away as if it had burned me and ran home as fast as I could. A
voice had exploded in my head—die tonight! I am coming toward you.
Tonight, oh yes, tonight!
I cried all the way home and when seeing my mother, I told her
everything. But Mom didn』t believe this kind of thing and she told me
that I was thinking too much. Her explanation did not comfort my fear.
I worried about the curse so much that I could not eat dinner. I stayed
in the living room all afternoon and felt despair. No one was going to
save me and I would die.
I was hoping that night would never come, but it did. It was my bedtime
and Mom sent me to bed. I kissed her with tears on my face but I gave
up asking her to stay with me. When she closed the door, the darkness
swallowed me, and there was only a little light from the street lamps.
Dogs were barking and the wind was blowing quietly. I tried to sleep
but I couldn』t because I was too scared.
My eyes opened wide and searched for the light; my hands grabbed the bed
quilt and I could hear my own breaths clearly. I was sweating and I
almost wetted myself. The flapping curtains were twisting my nerves
badly. I didn』t dare to sleep near the edge of the bed because I was
afraid the doll might come out from under the bed and tear open my
throat.
Suddenly, the door opened loudly!
「Ahhhhhhhh!」 I could bear no longer and screamed. I pushed my bed quilt
aside, trying to run out of the room, with my eyes closed. When I was
about to run out of the room, something grabbed me. 「NO! Let go, let
me go. Don』t drink my blood. Don』t kill me!」 I kept screaming. I
dared not open my eyes. I didn』t want to see the doll』s face, maybe
with sharp teeth in its mouth. I kept struggling and started kicking
and was about to bite it—I was going to fight for my life!
「What the hell are you doing?」 a voice came.
It was my dad! He just came home from his work and wanted to see if his
daughter was sleeping.
I fell down with great relief when I saw him and I was out of strength
and voice. I could not tell how much delight I felt when I saw my dad.
Dad tried to comfort his hysterical daughter and finally I fell asleep
in peace.
After that, I have never touched the dolls again. That』s good in two
ways: I don』t have to think about the nightmare and my parents, they are
happy to save the money, too.
