One evening, I went out for an appointment with friends after dinner.
The night was extremely still and windless. Vivid moon, gray sky and
bright streetlights made up a calm atmosphere. After checking my
motorcycle, I was under way.
Passing through the Tzu-Chaing Tunnel, the longest one in Taipei, was
the only way to arrive at my destination. With the breeze touching my
face, I rode and hummed into the tunnel. It was quite bright in the
tunnel; only a few vehicles accompanied me. The tunnel echoed the roar
of my motor, and I hummed even more loudly. I was riding at my usual
speed, and the exit of the tunnel was getting closer and closer.
Nevertheless, I also noticed that the vehicles in front of me were
getting fewer and fewer.
Ten minutes passed by. I found there was something strange--- the exit
was still far from me. I stopped the humming to listen. All I could
hear was my motor roaring--- there were few vehicles around me! I felt
cold. The ceiling was dripping. (However, it had not rained for quite a
few weeks.) I stepped on the accelerator; notwithstanding, my motor
remained stationary, instead of racing forward.
Suddenly, everything was quite. Just like entering a definitely
unknown space, I sensed myself weightless. Views were out of focus; my
sight was getting dim. Dizziness. Transparence.
Then again, I heard the sounds of my motor roaring, and the water
dripped as well. There was nobody else in the tunnel. I distinctly
sensed the presence of someone on the back of my seat. The body felt
cold. With terror, I took a peek at the rear-view mirror. To my great
horror, there was a woman』s face looking back at me, with long hair, a
terribly pale face, and an extremely sharp look. And she was grinning
at me.
At the sight of the woman』s face, I speeded up to the utmost of my
motorcycle』s capacity. I prayed continuously at the same time. I am
not certain how much time I had spent in the tunnel; nevertheless, as I
arduously came through the exit, in a moment, my motor fiercely thrust
through. To make certain, I much frightened took a peek at my rear-view
mirror again, and the woman disappeared.
I had forgotten how I arrived at the destination afterwards; I was
shaking with fear and looked pale. I was too terrified to speak even a
word. My friends anxiously inquired:
「Where is that lady sitting behind you on the motorcycle? I saw her
when you were riding toward us.」
