A Frightful Story

Unsolved Mystery

Leonard

Although we now live in such a modern world, believe it or not, there are still things that we are not able to explain with science.  My personal experience is quite a good example.

I studied in a remote private high school.  This school was surrounded by public graveyards, even the school itself was built on the graves.  In front of the main gate was a long, narrow road.  Without any crossroads, this only, small road directly stretched across the public graveyards.  The nearest neighbor of the school was more than three hundred meters away.  In the night, most drivers were not willing to drive through the grave road and horror stories about the road never stopped circulating among students.  I didn』t really pay any attention to them--until one night.

I used to study in the school with my friends until ten o』clock in the evening.  On the way home, even though we had to ride our bicycles through the graves, we didn』t feel uncomfortable or scared, as there were a whole bunch of us together.  One November night as we were leaving the school grounds, I found that I had left some books in the classroom, so I had to turn back to get them.  I asked my friends to go on ahead and not wait for me.  When I came out of the school, there was no one else on the road.

It was a windy night and the moon was hiding behind the thick clouds.  All along the way there were only four dim streetlights standing stiffly beside the road.  The tall grass on the graves were waving and sobbing.  This scene suddenly reminded me of those horror stories often told among my classmates.  I asked myself to believe that those stories were nothing but nonsense and started to ride my bike down the road.

As soon as I stepped on the paddle, the wind blew stronger.  The long blades of grass waved their hands as if they were inviting me to join them.  When I rode past the first streetlight, it suddenly went out.  I was surprised by the sudden darkness and forgot to keep stepping on the paddle.  The bike slowly slid to the second streetlight.  Just as I felt a little relieved about the closeness to the light, the second streetlight died out.  I unconsciously grabbed the handle of my bike.  Even though I clearly knew that I should ride faster, I was so scared that my legs were out of control.  My bones seemed to have melted and my legs hung dead.  Not knowing what to do, the bike slid down the road further.  When the third streetlight died out beside me, all I knew was that I burst into tears.  Still, I kept peddling.  Finally, I saw the last streetlight.  My heart pounded loudly.  Was it going to go out as the others had done?  I held my breath as I passed by the light.   I had finally cleared the graves.  It』s all over, at last.  Just at that moment, Boom!  Without warning, a big sound exploded behind me.  I turned back and saw an old, dark blue car crashing into the streetlight.  I would have been crushed if I were two seconds late.  I screamed as I rode my bike as fast as I could without turning back again.

The next day, however, was extremely calm.  No one knew anything about the crash and the streetlight stood beside the road as usual.  Although someone told me that streetlights were set to turn off automatically, I still couldn』t believe that was just a coincidence.  Until now, it is still an unsolved mystery.
