Hi-Tech Communication

I guess you have at least one mobile phone, don』t you?  The advances of technology are speeding up day by day.  They shorten the distance between people and help with all kinds of communication.  The mobile phone, the Internet, and the e-mail have become important parts of our daily lives.

Two to three decades ago, there was hardly any mobile phone in Taiwan, and even telephones were just becoming popular.  People communicated with one another by snail mail.  It took days and the mail might be lost in the process.  In some ways, mail sending was not reliable.  And if there was any emergency, sending the news out takes forever.  Yet, a handwritten letter conveyed all the emotions fully.  The writer wrote the letter word by word with his or her sincerity.  From writing the letter to sealing the envelope, every moment and effort represented the writer』s loving care.  Such mails were truly hot.

Nowadays, people spend lots of time on the Internet and the mobile phone.  These circumstances have also changed our human relationships.  We can chat with many strangers on the Internet and get to know many more people.  We connect with our friends more by e-mail, too.  Thus we hardly write or receive a handwritten letter any more.  No doubt, the e-mail is fast and convenient, but I can hardly feel its 「temperature.」  And some illegal companies might get our e-mail address and e-mail us trash and aphrodisiac e-mails.  As for the mobile phone, I appreciate its existence.  Because of it, I can keep in touch with my family and friends far away.  Though we can』t be together face to face, still mobile phones help us satisfy our yearning.  In the past, the charge for mobile phone communication was pretty expensive, but now it is much cheaper and may even be free due to the competition between many telephone companies.

While we are enjoying the convenience brought on by new technologies, we should not forget there are still many more disadvantages, such as radiation from the cell phones or the junk mails we receive everyday on the internet.  As modern people, we need to be careful when we use such technologies.
