Like all lovers, they eventually got married after all the passion and the quarrel. But soon after they were married, she discovered that married life was quite different from what she had imagined. Marriage was not like romantic love: it lacked passion and romance; but it added triviality and boredom. As she couldn』t but face the same old boring and dreary life every day, she could feel her heart wearing away little by little. Life was as bland as water. They were quite loving to each other in marriage, but they fight over some trivial things frequently. Moreover, he didn』t indulge her or meet her halfway like he used to. She concluded that men were truly hypocritical: they change into different personalities after getting married, and they were no longer tolerant or forbearing like the time when they were still dating. If she got a bit capricious now, her husband would usually ignore her or keep silent or even quarrel with her sometimes. He no longer pampered her. Although there were still some feelings inside her, she had had enough with this lifeless marriage. One day, after a huge fight, she brought up the word 「divorce」 and he responded immediately: 「Sure, let』s go now.」
It was a raining day, and they put up their umbrellas separately. Walking side by side, both remained quiet as they brooded over their own thoughts. It was pouring and the road was slippery, yet neither one was going to give in. There was a car parked by the roadside in front. The passageway was so narrow that only one person could pass at a time. He walked through first. After passing that narrow way, again she walked shoulder to shoulder with him. Suddenly, he grabbed at her. 「Why are you walking on my left side again?」 said he angrily. Meanwhile, a truck brushed past them and he turned sideways to shield her from the truck. The truck spattered his clothes with muddy water though it did not touch him. She was at a loss what to do for a short while. It was this simple action that made her realize his subtle but solid love. For a long time, he had always walked on her left side, protecting her from the traffic, from the wind and the rain and the danger. In all reality, this was true love, without any shining decoration but simple and deep. It seeps through incidentally without embellishment. Tears streamed down her face, mixing furiously with rain water. He wiped away her tears. 「Let』s go home,」 he told her. She nodded with certainty, grabbing at his hand tightly as if grabbing at a heavy load of love as well. I walk on your left side because I love you.
