Creating a good interview
- a cause for the interview: why now, why this person, what』s so special for the person—all these need to come through in the introduction; a good intro sets the tone for the interview and creates the significance for the occasion; thorough background research is mandatory
- devise good significant questions: not the usual simple superficial questions, but questions that come from your concern, your worry, your wondering; compare the interviews we have read this semester, good questions usually come from genuine interest
- follow-up: sometime things leak through an initial question, things that you could pick up and pursue; you must develop a keen eye for such moments; good follow-up questions often open new dimensions and new aspects
- wrapping up: sometimes it is useful to go back to previous questions and draw on previous answers to contrast with a new twist in the given answer to a later question; that shows the interviewee is alert and thoughtful and critical
- attitude: polite, thoughtful, knowledgeable, but commanding, perceptive
