Heart-Warming Photos Of The Sweet Bond Between Japanese Farmer & His 1,200 Pigs

From 1997 to 2007, Kagawa-based photographer Toshiteru Yamaji documented the sweet and tender relationship that Japanese farmer Otchan has with his 1,200 pigs.

Proving that there are certainly better ways to farm animals than in factories, these heart-warming pictures show how Otchan took loving care of each of his pigs—his affection for these animals is apparent in all of the images.

Other than simply seeing the pigs as a way to make a living, the farmer obviously enjoys spending time with them. In this series, he can be seen reading the newspaper and playing the guitar to them—in one shot, he has even brought a little pig to the beach for sunbathing.

Yamaji self-published these photos into a book in 2009 and won the 13th Japan Self-Publishing Awar’s graphic prize for it. The next year, publisher FOIL republished a revised edition of it—you can purchase it here.
